Prior to their engagement, and unbeknownst to his fiancée, Amerigo had a long and passionate affair with Charlotte Stant, who attended school with Maggie. The two separated because of his lack of funds, but Charlotte is still in love with him. When she receives an invitation to the wedding, she seizes the opportunity to reunite with him.

A few days before the ceremony, Amerigo and Charlotte wander into an antique store in search of a wedding gift from her to the couple. Proprietor A.R. Jarvis shows them an ancient bowl, carved from a single piece of crystal and embroidered with gold, he asserts is flawless. Charlotte is indecisive about buying it, and Jarvis offers to set it aside until she can make up her mind.

Despite knowing Amerigo and Charlotte's history, Maggie's meddlesome Aunt Fanny suggests the young woman and Adam would be a perfect match. The two eventually wed, much to the delight of Maggie, who had been concerned about her father's loneliness. The two couples find their lives closely interlocked, although the fact Maggie and Adam spend so much time together irritates their spouses, and when they find themselves at a weekend party in the country without their mates, Charlotte and Amerigo rekindle their affair. Fanny becomes aware of the illicit romance but, wanting to protect her niece from being hurt, says nothing. As time passes, however, Maggie becomes suspicious of the amount of time her husband and stepmother spend together.

In search of an unusual gift for her husband, who seemingly has everything, Maggie chances to wander into Jarvis' shop, and he shows her the bowl he had set aside for Charlotte years ago. Maggie agrees to buy it for £300 and asks that it be delivered to her home. When Jarvis discovers a barely discernible crack in the piece, he decides to bring it to Maggie himself, reveal the defect, and offer it to her for £150 instead. While waiting for her in the drawing room, he recognizes Amerigo and Charlotte in photographs on a table, and he innocently reveals they were the couple who originally considered purchasing the bowl, three days before the wedding, which Maggie always has believed was the first time her husband and friend met. The object suddenly becomes a symbol of adultery rather than a beautiful work of art, and Fanny intentionally drops it on the floor, hoping her niece will dispose of the pieces. But Maggie is not willing to forget what it represents, and as everyone avoids publicly discussing what each one of them privately knows, two marriages find themselves in possible jeopardy.

The Last Days of Disco

Picture
Kate Beckinsale: The Last Days of Disco

Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Chris Eigeman, Mackenzie Astin, Tara Subkoff, Jennifer Beals

The Last Days of Disco is a 1998 sardonic comedy and drama film written and directed by Whit Stillman and loosely based on his travels and experiences in various nightclubs in Manhattan, including Studio 54. The film concerns a group of Ivy League and Hampshire graduates falling in and out of love in the disco scene of Manhattan in the "very early 1980s". Chloë Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale have the lead roles.

The Last Days of Disco loosely depicts the "last days" of the disco era in the early 1980s, when weirdness, sex, and drugs ran rampant. The story centers on Alice Kinnon (Chloë Sevigny) and Charlotte Pingress (Kate Beckinsale), two young Manhattan women fresh out of college who work in a New York publishing house. The two women, companions but not necessarily close friends, frequent the local disco together in search of music, dance, and romance. They are starkly different in personality: Alice is intelligent, quiet, and rather soft-spoken, while Charlotte is outgoing, conceited, and brutally honest, giving Alice constant "advice". The women subsequently decide to move in together and find a third roommate, Holly (Tara Subkoff), because neither of them makes quite enough money or receives enough help from her parents to cover the expense. They begin a friendship with one of the club's managers, Des (Chris Eigeman), and find one-night stands and relationships through the ensuing year, until it appears that the disco era has ended. At the end of the film, Alice and Charlotte part ways after a conflict, and Charlotte and Des discuss how their "big" personalities are "too big" for most people with "healthy-size" personalities, such as Alice. The film closes with a spirited musical dance sequence on the subway with Alice, Josh (her now-boyfriend), and the other passengers and pedestrians to The O'Jays' song "Love Train".

Haunted

Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Aidan Quinn, Anthony Andrews, Anna Massey

David Ash (Aidan Quinn), an American Professor, enters into the field of parapsychology and has spent a majority of his life disproving the existence of ghosts, in order to deal with the untimely death of his twin sister, Juliet, for which he blames himself. He receives an invitation from the Mariell family to investigate the alleged hauntings at their home, Edbrook House. At the train station, he is met and is immediately smitten by the beautiful Christina Mariell (Kate Beckinsale), who informs him that she and her brothers actually hired him to try to calm the fears of their aging nanny. Christina reasoned that due to nanny's declining mental health since their mother's death, nanny Tess (Anna Massey) has convinced herself that Mrs. Mariell's ghost returns every evening to haunt Edbrook House.

As David begins his investigations, he becomes aware of a presence in the house which goes against everything he believes thus strengthening his determination to expose the paranormal activities as nothing more than a hoax perpetrated by joker, younger brother Simon (Alex Lowe). His initial ideas regarding the afterlife is shaken by the increasingly vivid visions of the Juliet from his youth, freely prowling the halls or the grounds of Edbrook. Unable to sleep from the strange nightly disturbance, David wears down and begins to hallucinate, causing him to start questioning the state of his own sanity.

Further complicating the investigation is Christina's continuous flirtations with David, a distraction David gladly welcomes but older brother, Robert (Anthony Andrews), is adamantly against. When David decides to finally leave Edbrook, he asks Christina to come away with him. Although she refuses, they engage in a passionate kiss and end up in bed together. In the morning when David wakes, the wind is gusting through the house, which is now cloaked in black drapes and littered with fallen leaves. He searches for Christina but instead sees his twin sister's ghost who leads David to a cemetery. Juliet calls his attention to a specific tombstone which states that Robert, Christina and Simon Mariel all died in a fire at Edbrook.

A very confused David returns to the house and confronts nanny Tess. She confirms that the Mariel siblings are indeed dead and their ghosts will do anything to keep Nanny Tess and David from leaving. Nanny Tess also reveals that the siblings' mother, Mrs. Mariel, drowned herself after discovering a drunken Simon and elder brother Robert in bed with Christina, in their parent's bedroom. Robert's ghost appears and forced nanny Tess to confess to their murder by locking the siblings in bedroom, then setting fire to the house.

The Mariel siblings reveals that seeing as they have David now, they no longer need Nanny Tess to torment. After killing nanny Tess, Christina asks David to die for them, but when escapes to the upstairs bedroom, the siblings set the room ablaze, trapping David. While Robert, Simon and Christina cackle mockingly within the flames at his imminent death, Juliet suddenly appears and walks through the flames, takes David by the hand and rescues him from the inferno.
After the harrowing experience, David returns home and is greeted by his assistant as he steps off the train. A few steps behind the unsuspecting couple, Christina steps out of the shadows and follows them through the fog as they leave the platform.
