The character first starred in two serial films in the 1940s, Batman and Batman and Robin. The character also appeared in the 1966 film Batman, which was a feature film adaptation of the 1960s Batman TV series starring Adam West.
Tim Burton's Batman: He took over as director of the first film. Batman 1989 starring Michael Keaton. Burton and Keaton returned for the 1992 sequel Batman Returns.
Joel Schumacher's Batman: Batman Forever 1995 starring Val Kilmer. He also directed the 1997 sequel Batman & Robin, which starred George Clooney.

Christopher Nolan's Batman: Batman Begins 2005  aimed for a darker and more realistic tone. Starring Christian Bale. He also directed the 2008 sequel The Dark Knight with Bale reprising his role. (After he had completed filming The Dark Knight, Ledger died of a sleeping pill overdose.) A third and final installment in the Nolan series, The Dark Knight Rises 2012. The Dark Knight Rises is intended to complete Nolan's Batman trilogy.
